Technical Documents are like onions; they have layers
A document that gives an in-detail functioning, creation, or architecture of a product is considered technical documentation. It is essentially a manual for new users or in general anyone who wants to get themselves acquainted with the functioning of the product. As a writer, it is very important to seek feedback on the technical documents along the way, both as a gut check to make sure things are not getting complicated and most importantly, are being expressed correctly, thereby delivering exactly what needs to be shared with the end-user.
However, before the content is delivered to the end user, it must be vetted by the Subject Matter Expert (SME). When it comes to technical documentation, one of the greatest ways to structure it is as ‘30/90 feedback’.
The 30/90 Feedback approach
According to the 30/90 feedback structure, feedback should be given when a job is 30 percent complete and lastly 90 percent complete. The percentages do not correspond to the amount of time that has passed; rather, they pertain to the task’s expected completion time. For basic activities, the period between 60% and 90% is very certainly going to be minimal. What is not in each of the phases of 30, 60, and 90 feedback is just as essential as what is in each of them — this saves time and eliminates irritation.
As a writer, it is very important to seek feedback on the technical docs along the process-way, both as a gut check to make sure if the things are not getting complicated and most importantly are being expressed correctly, thereby delivering exactly what needs to be shared across to the end-user.
The most important factor in any documentation is to establish a relationship between readers. To establish and maintain a relationship with the readers, the tone of the documentation should preferably be a conversational one. It is advised that there should be a topic or a special viewpoint on a given issue, that is passionately shared with the readers. This will make it easier to engage readers.
Hence it is highly recommended that one build a clear, precise framework, and write content that transforms into what can be called product heroes.
